I don't know if I was entirely alone in my discomfort at the jubilation of Osama Bin Laden's demise. I'm not of course taking lightly the atrocities that Al Qaeda have committed but I have to wonder about the mentality of people waving flags about, chanting 'USA'. Have we really evolved that much as a race?
This is a case of state sponsored revenge. Understandable - perhaps even right, but lets not kid ourselves that it's going to make things any safer. Al Qaeda is not going to die with OBL. They're going to be back, with a new leader and a new mission of vengeance.
I'm glad at least we're spared the show trial that would have occurred if they had taken him alive, during which there would have been more terrorist attacks and many more people dead. I suspect, despite the ever changing version of events from US intelligence; that is why they killed him at the scene.
Now that its done, I hope that we can show ourselves to be the tolerant, dignified ones and move forward. It won't of course stop the hard core extremists, but we may be able to pull back some from the fringes. Ultimately, it is education that will make the world a better place. Not revenge and warfare.
